As we wrap up another year, I’ve been diving into my annual reflection ritual. It’s a time when I sit down with my journal, sift through the ups and downs, and capture those lightbulb moments of growth and learning. This year has been quite the adventure, with explosive growth that I’d love to share with you.
Picture this: over the past four years, I’ve switched careers, remarried, and made a cross-country move. Talk about a whirlwind! But let me tell you, adversity has been relentless. There have been countless times when I’ve lost sight of my “why”—that driving force behind everything I do. I remember one particular moment in the middle of a major project when I felt completely adrift. That “why” is the heartbeat of my actions and the reason I keep moving forward, even when life seems to pull me backward.
When life throws its punches, it can feel like I’ve messed up or missed something crucial. It’s brought me to my knees, questioning everything and feeling utterly alone. I call this my wilderness experience—a period of intense personal struggle and growth. Does that sound familiar to you?
Navigating life’s uncertainties can feel like a maze, especially when our purpose becomes unclear. But here’s the kicker: feeling lost is a normal part of being human and a golden opportunity for personal growth. Remember, you’re not alone in this.
Here’s what I’ve learned from my wilderness adventures:
1. Purpose is a Journey, Not a Destination: Life is always changing, and so are we. Our purpose is a continuous pursuit of meaning. Keep reflecting and stay engaged to remain vibrant.
2. Anchor in Your Values: When life gets shaky, core values like compassion, respect, and curiosity are your guiding lights. They help steer you toward a fulfilling life.
3. Value Your Relationships: Life’s richness comes from deep connections. Even when off track, living for family, friends, and community keeps us grounded and reminds us we’re part of something bigger.
4. Explore and Discover: Life swings between exploration and focus. During exploratory times, let go of assumptions and embrace new possibilities. Enjoy the freedom these phases offer.
5. Embrace the Lessons of Uncertainty: Feeling adrift can be unsettling but teaches humility and empathy. These lessons refine us into better leaders and help align our lives with true priorities.
6. Trust Your Path: Losing sight of your purpose can be scary, but clarity will return. Life flows like a river, guiding you back to purpose. Embrace the journey, keep moving, and trust you’ll find your way.
If you’re navigating your wilderness and feel like your “why” is missing, remember, you don’t have to do it alone! I have a support network—cohort groups, a church small group, a life coach, a mentor, and a counselor. Seeking guidance isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a powerful tool for rediscovering your purpose.
As a life coach, I’ve helped many find their way out of the wilderness and into their purpose. I’m passionate about helping people navigate life more smoothly, embrace the process, and grow exponentially. If this resonates with you, reach out to me. It’s the best gift you can give yourself, and I’d be honored to be part of your journey.
P.S. The attached photo features my husband, my youngest child, and his girlfriend in Peru. Visiting them this month was a meaningful part of my “why.” What’s yours?
